Nothing says “Holidays with the Helmig/Clemonds Fam” like traditional German Glühwein.  Today, Shannon is sharing her family’s recipe and you better believe we’ll all be trying this for Christmas in a few weeks!

Traditional German Mulled Wine (Glühwein) Recipe:
*Recipe makes one large pot – enough for 6 wine-drinking family members to enjoy over the course of a weekend!

Ingredients

  • 3 lemons
  • 4 oranges
  • 10 whole cloves
  • 1 star anise
  • 4 cinnamon sticks (we used these)
  • *Tea infuser ball if you have one (you can buy one here!)
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 4 bottles of dry red wine (cabernet works great!)
  • 1 cup brandy
Step 1:
Peel lemons and oranges (this does not need to be fancy, you can even use a knife!) Place all zest in a pan along with juice from all fruit.

Step 2:
Place the cloves and star anise in the tea infuser (this is my little trick – most recipes call for cheesecloth which I never have so I just pop them in my little tea infuser ball and it’s so much easier!) and into the pan.

Step 3:
Add water, cinnamon sticks, and sugar to the pan. Bring to a simmer until sugar dissolves. Continue to simmer, stirring occasionally for about 20 minutes, or until the mixture reduces by 1/3.

Step 4:
Add wine & brandy and bring to a simmer (do not boil!) until you are ready to serve. Most recipes tell you to remove the spices, but I leave them in all weekend and it just keeps getting better!

Step 5:
Enjoy! (And tag #clemondscabin when you try it! ;))
