Think those cheesy romantic comedies are all fluff and no substance?  Think again!  The road to walking down the aisle is filled with many plans, feelings, and decisions.  And looking back, a lot of the “common sense” stuff has actually been taught by some of our favorite leading ladies on their journey down the aisle.  Behind all the cheesy stuff (that we love) lie the simplest life lessons that we all live by.

LESSON NO. 1: GIRLS FIRST, ALWAYS (BRIDE WARS)

1 aa

In any situation, putting your girlfriends first is a must.  Especially when it comes to wedding plans.

LESSON NO. 2: MARRY YOUR BEST FRIEND (MADE OF HONOR)

1 a

They always say, “marry your best friend.”  But in the movie Made of Honor, it really is true!  Be with the guy who makes you laugh – the person who truly is your  best friend.

LESSON NO. 3: YOU CAN’T PLAN EVERYTHING (THE WEDDING PLANNER)

1 aaa

For us wedding planners, this one’s kind of hard to wrap our head around, but it is true ;)  Good things happen when you’re least expecting them.  If Mary (Jennifer Lopez) can stop planning out every aspect of her life, we should all give it a try!

LESSON NO. 4: TRADITION ISN’T FOR EVERYONE (SEX AND THE CITY)

1 aaaa

When it comes to wedding styles, don’t stick with the status quo.  Do what suits you and your fiancée.  Carrie and Big did things so backwards, and although there were many bumps in the road, they ended up together!  So if you don’t want a diamond, swap it for a big closet. Or if you don’t want to wear a white dress, wear a black one!  In 2014, anything goes.

LESSON NO. 5: DON’T BE AFRAID TO LET LOOSE (27 DRESSES)

1 aaaaa

So many of us are always trying to keep up this perfect, professional persona.  And even though it could be mortifying to think about dancing barefoot on a bar singing Bennie and the Jets, maybe it’s just what we all need to loosen up a little bit!

LESSON NO. 6: CHANNEL YOUR 13 YEAR-OLD SELF (13 GOING ON 30)

1 aaaaaa

Jenna Rink is the average 30 year old: big time magazine editor, pro hockey player boyfriend, gorgeous NYC apartment, the works.  (Okay, we want her life)  But when she channels her 13 year-old self, everything falls into place.  Connect with your childhood best friend, talk to your parents, and be a hard worker – just like you were taught when you were 13.

LESSON NO. 7: STAND UP FOR YOURSELF (SWEET HOME ALABAMA)

1 aaaaaaa

Small town girl turned NYC designer Melanie Carmichael shows everyone who’s boss when she heads home to Alabama.  We just love how she takes charge of every situation and handles it with grace and strength – she’s not even afraid to deck her (ex) future monster-in-law in the face.

LESSON NO. 8: BE SUPPORTIVE, NO MATTER WHAT (BRIDESMAIDS)

1 aaaaaaaaa

Bridesmaids taught us many life lessons, but we are going to stick with this one:  support your friends, no matter what.  While Kristin Wiig played the “hot mess best friend” perfectly and hilariously, the moral of the story is: don’t go crazy while it’s your best friend’s time to shine!

LESSON NO. 9: DON’T BE A STAGE 5 CLINGER (WEDDING CRASHERS)

1 a wc

Okay, maybe this isn’t a romantic comedy, but we do love that it’s a wedding movie from a man’s perspective!  Thank goodness we now know not to be a stage 5 clinger ;)

LESSON NO. 10: YOU MARRY THE FAMILY (MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING)

1 a bfgw

This is our favorite lesson, which is why it’s last.  Weddings are fun, exciting, and glamorous, but what they don’t tell you is that you are also marrying your fiancee’s family.  So whether they’re loud and intrusive or sweet and quiet, get to know them and embrace them!
